Notes A little rubbed. Softened to corner tips and spine ends. A few faint marks to background on the front board and some more definite marks to the back. Some tanning and age toning internally. Scatered foxing. Small chip to margin of p.59/60. Plates are all present. Text is clean. Binding is sound.

Hardback. 94pp. John Henry Newman’s poem reflecting his developing Catholic thought. Charming early twentieth century edition in illustrated cloth binding. Illustrated by Stella Langdale who specialised in ethereal and mystical and was often called upon to illustrated religious landscapes. Black and white frontis with tissue guard and 9 further plates. Introduction by Gordon Tidy and Anglican minister who like Newman converted to Catholicism though Tidy returned to the Anglican church in 1912. Bound in dark blue cloth illustrated in black and white and lettered in gilt this volume’s design matches other John Lane publications of the time (of similar subjects) which were also illustrated by Langdale. Illustrated endpapers.
