Notes Binding is clean and gilt is bright. The external front hinge is partly cracked. The marbled endpapers are old but have perhaps been added to cover a weak internal joint and they are now worn themselves. The leather is chipped to spine ends and there is a tiny area of exposed board to one corner of the rear board. Binding remains sound. Internally the first few pages show some dustiness and light age toning but the vast majority of the text is very clean and bright.

Hardback. Two volumes bound in one. Text in French. Full calf binding with gilt decorations to spine and to both boards. Novel. Le Diable Boiteux drew on the seventeenth century Spanish work El Diablo cojuelo by Luis Vélez de Guevara. Le Sage credits de Guevara in an introduction. Le Diable Boiteux novel contained barely fictionalised versions of some of the Paris elite making it a source of gossip in its time. Le Sage revised the work often during his life. With twelve copper engraved plates. Calf has been mottled and then decorated with a deep repeating border of stylised flowers, hearts and swags. Gilt titles to spine within printed gilt compartments. Gilt flower and decorative corners to the remaining compartments. Marbled endpapers.
