Description
Large format paperback: 315 by 250mm (12½ by 9¾ inches). this is a substantial advertisement for John Hassell’s art courses. Illustrated throughout with former students work with in the text as well as many colour plates tipped onto thicker cartridge type paper, the plates being by Hassell, both formal studies and commercial work. Laid in are two long typed letters from Hassell to a prospective student that includes a critique of a potential student’s sketch (which is also included). Both letters are signed by hand. John Hassell’s commercial art included the famous “The Jolly Fisherman” best known by its slogan “Skegness is so Bracing” of 1908 which is so assocaited with the town that there is a statue of it, but he was also well regarded by his peers being a member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Society of Miniature Painters. Hassell passed his talents on, as he was the father of the wood engraver and illustrator Joan Hassell.
