Hardback. 176pp. First edition. Black and white frontis and 7 further photographs. E. M. Forster’s account of his two visits to India in 1912–1913 and 1921 where he was private secretary to Tukojirao III, the Maharaja of the state of Dewas Senior. The book consists of some introductory letters home, an essay ‘The State and its Ruler’, the main section of letters home from 1921 and finally an account of the catastrophe that befell the Maharajah towards the end of his life. Letters were originally addressed to Forster’s mother and other friends and relatives.
