Paperback. xxix, 335pp. Edited by Stuart Curran. From the Women Writers in English 1350-1850 series. Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) was a novelist and Romantic poet whose works were praised by William Wordsworth. This edition includes an introductory essay that in particular details the influence of Smith’s poetry, “Charlotte Smith was the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic. Influential among her contemporaries ... her most direct beneficiary among the more canonical male poets of the period was William Wordsworth”. After her death Wordsworth reflected “that Smith was a poets ‘to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are ever likely to be eith acknowledged or remembered’”.
