Leather is cracked to joints but the binding remains sound. Contents is crisp and free from toning or other age marks. Leather is clean to boards but has a few faint shadow marks to spine. Small patch of leather loss to the surface of one of the raised bands and spine is a little rough and scuffed. gilt titles and the red label are in very good condition. A clean and sound copy of this fine, signed binding. |

Hardback. Fine tree-calf binding by Riviere. The myths, ghost stories, poems, parodies and pastiches that make-up the Ingoldsby Legends were written by clergyman Richard Barham under the pseudonym Thomas Ingoldsby and were initially published as a series in Bentley's Miscellany and other periodicals before being collated into three series by publisher Richard Bentley. This edition by Fowde includes all three series and reproduces the Bentley title as well as a frontispiece portrait of the author and 25 illustrations throughout the text by Cruikshank, Leech and others. lv, 527pp. Includes substantial memoir of Richard Barham. Bound in full leather with tree patterning, raised bands to spine, gilt titles and gilt decorative borders to boards. Red leather label to spine for titles and gilt decoration to the remaining compartments. Gilt dentelles. Gilt to all edges. Marbled endpapers. Binding is by Riviere and Son and bears the stamp to one of the prelims.
