Description
Hardback. The complete Dr Syntax verse satires by William Combe, written in the early nineteenth century. The tour first sets out to satirise the picturesque principles of William Gilpin espoused in his essays of the 1760s and 1770s, the other two continue the story of Dr Syntax. Three colour plates, one for each of the tours, presumed to be by Thomas Rowlandson. Bound in olive cloth with gilt labels to spine and black details and and decoration to spine and to the upper board. Blind stamped decorations to the lower board. Publisher’s ads to endpapers and a substantial publisher’s catalogue to the rear of the volume. 376pp+catalogue.
