Family history centring on the lives of four Victorian sisters: Meriel, Lucy, Lavinia and May, neices of Gladstone, and whose father was prominent in the reform of education for girls. It details, amongst other matters, how three of the girls in turn ran the house for their widowed father, their feelings on education and sad tale of the murder of Lucy's husband. As well as the Lyttelton family there is much detail of the Gladstones and the Cavendish family of Chatsworth (Dukes of Devonshire).
